Sugden are the great British name in Class A amplification, hand-building in Yorkshire and synonymous with the format for decades, and the Masterclass MPA-4 is Class A in its most uncompromising domestic form: one amplifier per channel. Each monoblock runs a fully balanced circuit in pure Class A, delivering 165 watts into 8 ohms, a genuinely substantial figure for a Class A design and one that gives the amplifier the headroom to take heavy, complex music in its stride while keeping the lowest-level detail clearly in view.
Running the amplifiers as balanced monoblocks, rather than a single stereo chassis, is where the real gains lie. With one dedicated unit for each speaker, channel separation becomes absolute, the noise floor drops, dynamics open up and the soundstage locks rock-solid between the speakers. The reward is that unmistakable Class A sound: liquid, natural and utterly free of strain, from an amplifier built by hand to last a lifetime.
